Red-billed Gull

Scientific Name: Chroicocephalus scopulinus

Population Estimate: 100K - 1M

Range / Habitat: Nonmigratory New Zealand native, primarily coastal though occasionally inland. Found along the entire coast of both islands.

Field Notes: Medium-sized white-headed gull with light grey mantle. Adults with striking red bill, eye ring and feet as above. Juveniles with dark bill and legs. Similar in appearance to Silver Gull in Australia, with which now considered a single species.

Personal Notes: Though common, a welcome sight on our return to New Zealand.
